New drivers for 965gm series: do they actually make a difference?

Yes, definitely! As you can see here, there have been huge frame rate and compatability updates for users of this card. for the 945gm though, sadly, there won't be any such drivers released. Why? The new drivers are only for cards that support hardware transform and lighting. Still, BF2 playable = major step forward for integrated graphics.

I just recieved my Inspiron 1525. It has a 965 series integrated graphics card but the latest drivers won't install. It says I need to install the latest drivers from Dell but they are almost a year old.

yeah, dell requires its own drivers, sadly. hopefully dell will release its own drivers featuring this technology soon.

I figured out how to get around it. Go to device manager and remove the graphics device, ensuring to select 'remove device software'. Then you can install any drivers you want.

I have the latest intel driver (from the intel website) installed now and I tried running TF2 on low at 640x480 with mat_dxlevel 81 enabled and the game is still unplayable in firefights. I get about 10 FPS with 6+ characters onscreen.

really? okay, have you used the other settings (+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 -dxlevel 70 +mat_bumpmap 0 +mat_specular 0 +map_background none -autoconfig)? i can actually get better than that with a slower GPU, so make sure you've used these commands too. for any further comments on this, use the Half life 2/source engine topic.
